This hands-on workshop is a rare opportunity to learn the Wasco flat-bottom weaving technique—from a true tradition bearer. Under the guidance of Valerie Switzler, you’ll weave your own Sally Bag using cotton yarn and twining string, build confidence with twining methods, and explore the cultural roots of this iconic style. A potluck in the middle keeps our hands busy and our hearts full.
Date: July 12th, 10:00am to 1:00pm
Location: Sawyer Park, 62999 O. B. Riley Rd, Bend
Price: $65 + $10 for materials
Tickets: 15 spots available
Pre-register for the next session of this workshop. No charge! You will be charged once we get at least [Pre-reg Cap] pre-registrants and you agree to the date of the workshop. You'll be first in line and we'll work with you on the date.
Forget the “T” or cross—Wasco weaving starts with a clever, clean flat-bottom technique that sets Sally Bags apart. You'll learn how to launch your bag the traditional way, building a solid foundation for your weaving journey.
With step-by-step guidance, you’ll get hands-on experience applying basic twining methods to create your own design. Most folks will leave with a finished bag and the confidence to keep going at home.
Nothing says community like a potluck. Breaking bread while building bridges, so to speak. This workshop will include a potluck, a chance to talk about what you are learning, share experiences, and get to know one another. We'll supply the main protein. Please bring something along to share with your neighbors!
Valerie Switzler has over 30 years of experience in Wasco weaving, a tradition she learned from her aunt, Eraina Palmer, recognized nationally for first teaching this technique to people outside the tribal community. Valerie began weaving as a young adult and continues to share this sacred art to keep it alive. As General Manager for Education for the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Valerie leads efforts to revitalize the Kiksht language. A beloved teacher and master weaver, Valerie brings deep knowledge, cultural integrity, and a warm heart to everything she does.

We’ll be outside, so dress for the weather! Layers, sun protection, and comfy clothes are all a good idea. You’ll be sitting and working with yarn outdoors.
We provide all weaving materials. Please bring scissors, a dish to share for the potluck, and any drinks or snacks you like.
Kids 12 and up are welcome with an adult. Everyone who attends needs a ticket.
Yes! We’ll take a break for a potluck—please bring something to share.
