They’re not just any ol’ dog—stock dogs are bred and trained to work livestock with focus, finesse, and a heap of instinct. We’ll break down how they operate, the traits that matter most, and what it really looks like when they’re doing their thing out in the field.
Our guest stock dog expert will show off herding behaviors in real time, with working dogs demonstrating classic moves like gathering and driving. You’ll learn how to read a dog’s instinct, assess temperament, and what signs point to a good herding partner—whether you’re picking a puppy or dreaming big.
Spoiler alert: these dogs need a lot. We’ll talk lifestyle match, breed differences, training levels, and realistic daily responsibilities. This isn’t a sales pitch—it’s a conversation to help you make an informed, confident decision.
Nothing says community like a potluck. Breaking bread whilhe building bridges, so to speak. This workshop will include a potluck, a chance to talk about what you are learning, share experiences, and get to know one another. We'll supply the main protein. Please bring something along to share with your neighbors!
Nicholas Mason first got into stockdogs while managing a farm with some wild Kikko goats, Raising his first stock dog, Whiskey, triggered what has become a passion that he puts to work daily. Nicholas runs Single Malt Stockdogs, where he breeds, trains, and sells stockdogs. When not tending to his polypay sheep, Nicholas spends his time working other people's stock with his dogs, on his stockdog business, and on his fence business. He's an award-winning competitor in dog trials, competitions where dogs are judged on their training. Nicholas lives on a small family farm, and he loves his work! We all should be so lucky!
