Coiling is the ancient art of spiraling and stitching—turning humble pine needles into something both useful and beautiful. In this beginner-friendly workshop, basket weaving artist Lorraine Lapekes will walk you through the foundational techniques of pine needle coiling. You’ll leave with a small basket in progress, a handful of new skills, and everything you need to keep weaving at home: a weaving needle, cordage, pine needles, and a gauge. This four-hour session is hands-on, relaxed, and perfect for anyone curious about heritage crafts or looking to slow things down and try something tactile.
When: We'll schedule when 7 people pre-register!
Where: Sisters/Redmond
Pre-Reg Price: $100
Full Price: $125
Supplies Fee: $10

Pre-registration is free; we only charge your credit card when we're ready to schedule (and you say ok). When 7 people pre-register, we'll set up the next workshop with your input on dates!

Not all pine needles are created equal—learn how to choose the right kind for coiling and how to prep them. You’ll get comfortable with the tools of the trade (gauge, needle, cordage), and practice a simple stitch as you begin your very own basket.

Lorraine will guide you through each step and offer hands-on help as you go. You’ll take home your starter basket and a packet of supplies and resources so you can continue at your own pace.

Nothing says community like a potluck. Breaking bread while building bridges, so to speak. This workshop will include a potluck, a chance to talk about what you are learning, share experiences, and get to know one another. We'll supply the main protein. Please bring something along to share with your neighbors!
Lorraine Lapekes first fell in love with pine needle basketry at the Sisters Harvest Faire in 2022, and hasn’t stopped coiling since. A self-proclaimed “novice crafter,” Lorraine learned through tutorials, books, trial, and plenty of error. She lives among the long-needle Ponderosas of Central Oregon, where she also dabbles in watercolor, gourd art, photography, and fiber crafts. Her approach is thoughtful, supportive, and geared toward helping beginners feel right at home.
