Central Oregon’s soil can feel like it’s working against you. It’s sandy, stingy with nutrients, and not exactly the lush loam of gardening dreams. But here’s the good news: you can grow healthy, thriving plants here—once you understand what your plants are trying to tell you. In this workshop, you'll learn why our local soils behave the way they do, how plants interact with them, and how to choose amendments and practices that actually work. Whether you're growing veggies or flowers, this session gives you the tools to build better soil and a more productive garden—no more guessing, just growing. Plus: potluck lunch!
When: February 28th, 9:30am - 12:30pm
Where: OSU Extension Redmond, 3800 SW, SE Airport Way Bldg. 4, Redmond
Ticket Options: $60, $75, and $90

Pre-registration is free; we only charge your credit card when we're ready to schedule (and you say ok). When 15 people pre-register, we'll set up the next workshop with your input on dates!

Learn how plants access water and nutrients, and why it’s a constant dance with the soil. We’ll break down how local soils can be developed, what they typically offer (and don’t). You’ll leave with the confidence to make better choices for your plants and your soil—without buying every product in the garden store.

We'll cover the most effective soil-building practices and amendments suited to Central Oregon. You'll learn how to choose materials based on your garden’s specific needs—not just marketing claims. Whether you're a backyard grower or small-scale farmer, you’ll walk away with real-world strategies to support soil health over time.

Nothing says community like a potluck. Breaking bread while building bridges, so to speak. This workshop will include a potluck, a chance to talk about what you are learning, share experiences, and get to know one another. We'll supply the main protein. Please bring something along to share with your neighbors!
Scott Maricle was born into a conventional farming family, but his path has taken some interesting turns—from dairy farming to disaster restoration to regenerative agriculture. He call's himself a born again farmer! After raising his family on a Tumalo farm growing everything from beef to garbanzo beans, Scott sold his business in 2018 to focus on growing nutrient-dense food—without pests, disease, or compromise. His passion? Working with nature, not against it. Scott sees his farm as an ecosystem and himself as a steward within it—part of the great orchestra of nature.

We’re thrilled to partner with Well Rooted Produce, a beloved Bend-based farm and U-Pick operation. Their work connects people to place through nutrient-dense food, beautiful flowers, and a deep love for the land. Like us, they believe that healthy communities grow from the ground up—through hands-on learning, shared meals, and seasonal abundance.
